Crawford County Speedway 6/19/15

My 28th race of the season brought me to the Crawford County Speedway in Denison. It was a picture perfect night for racing as 80 drivers made there way there.

The first feature of the night was the Sport Compacts and put on a good race. Half the cylinders twice the fun as I always say. In the early stages they were 3 and 4 wide. A couple of weekly hard charging Thompson boys were slowly working there way thru the field. But there charge to the front was not enough as Cory Stapleton picked up his first career win. His brother Alec who beat him to the checkers last week would finish 2nd while Tyler Thompson, Cody Thompson and Schneckloth rounded out the top 5.

Up next was the IMCA Hobby Stock feature.. Eighteen would make the feature and the night started off rough for Ankeny driver Jaime Songer as Kevin Bruck made contact with him resulting in Songer getting upside down on the frontstretch he was okay but it was Jason Kohl who stole the moment as he made a very good sportsmanship move and stopped his car by Songers climbed out and was the first on scene to check on Jaime to make sure he was okay. After a brief delay and even a small barbecue on front stretch to burn off some fuel left over it was back to racing. But as the ol` saying yellows breed yellows and indeed they did. The race would reach its time limit after only a few laps and it was the 2 of Cory Madden who would take the win. I was not able to catch the rest of the results as the race was abruptly called.

Sport Mods would roll off next. Sixteen signed in and made the feature. Jake Sachau would go onto win but the real story was Logan Scott who bounced back after rolling his car over in the hotlaps. Dylan Petersen who made his first visit of 2015 made a nice charge thru the field after starting 12th. Keegan Scott gave Sachau a good run for the win but would come up short and have to settle for the bridesmaid spot. Jonathan Logue, Logan Scott, Jake McBirnie Dylan Petersen, Tom Vandyke and Arie Schouten would complete the top 8.

Twelve IMCA Stock Cars would be up next. Terry Klocke would take advantage of his front row starting spot and lead early on with Justin Bromert in 2nd. However it was short lived and Klocke would fade back and eventually spin out and get collected by Bob Staeirt resulting in a dnf on the stat sheet for Staeirt. One guy who you never count out anywhere laid back and waited for his move and struck of course I am talking about none other Mike Nichols. With everybody on the bottom it was Nichols who made the middle groove work and would go onto win his 3rd race of the season at the speedway. Breda Iowa`s Brian Blessington would finish 2nd. Adam Klocke, Marcus Hansen, Bill Reetz, Casey Fredrichsen, Mike Stapleton and Terry Klocke would round out the top 8.

The final event was the IMCA Modifieds. 18 signed in but 17 made the feature as Jeff Stephens had an accident in heat and was unable to make the call. Rookie Ryan Topf and veteran driver Craig Reetz would make up the front row and was Reetz would take early advantage and Topf would follow suit in 2nd, But all eyes were on Sioux City excitement Chris Ableson as he was making a charge to the front. A few yellows would keep the field close and would benefit the Book mobile of Dylan Book as he was also charging his way to the front. Dylan would pass Reetz with 5 to go to take the lead and Ableson would get Reetz for 2nd. A late yellow was not what anybody would want to see with Chris Ableson right behind them but Book was able to hold him off and pick up his first career win in the Modified division in his rookie campaign. Ableson would have to settle for the bridesmaid spot while pole sitter Craig Reetz would finish 3rd. Veteran Ricky "Racer" Stephan, Brandon "Red" Monson, Todd VanEaton, Jeff James and Ryan Topf completed my results that I wrote down.
